“Blogging is Dead Marion”
Someone said this to me at a conference last year as we discussed building her internet business. I smiled and asked, “Why do you feel that is the case?”
“It’s obvious don’t you think? I mean, podcasts are the hot new thing and Instagram posts are like mini blog bites that everyone loves to consume!”
So YES, in many cases what she said IS true. Blogging looks a heck of a lot different than when I typed my first post in 2011. And yes, if we look around today it’s easy to see that everyone from fashion bloggers to dietitians to true crime authors are jumping like crazy onto the Podcast wagon. And Instagram is an incredible space for content creation and engagement!
But blogging is not (and will likely never be) dead. And here is why:
Blogging has simply evolved from being “the only thing” to “one of several things” for the internet entrepreneur.
I mean golly…back when I started in 2011, the rule-of-thumb was that if you wanted to grow a serious blog, you needed to blog at least 4-5 days a week. That is a poo-ton of work for someone to keep up with unless you have a team around you!
Thank goodness this is no longer the case due to growth in allllllll the diversification channels! Nearly every blogger and brand has streams of audiences on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and/or Podcasts.
Basically, blogging has gone from being the whole enchilada to being just the delicious carby flour tortilla that holds it all together. It’s the home base that is consistent and controllable. And now I’m hungry but this leads me to my next point…
2. Blogging is one of the few spaces where YOU can control!
Mark Zuckerberg continuously changes the algorithm for Facebook + Instagram (he just announced a BIG one last week)! And what happens every time he does this? Internet entrepreneurs react with anger and sadness because once again, their worlds have been shooketh by circumstances outside their control!
Basically, your Instagram account that you’ve worked so hard to cultivate over the years could be shut down tomorrow with zero warning and leaving you standing there holding your iPhone sobbing because how will you ever connect with “your people” again?! (I actually know two people with over 30k followers each that this literally happened to).
But as much power as Zeeks (my nickname for him) and his algorithm have zero power over the content and growth of your blog. That is your baby.
Which leads me to reason #3…
3. The REASON for blogging has evolved to being a fantastic place to build your email list!
Forget about Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat…EMAIL is king. You simply get in front of your audience in a completely different way that is quantifiably proven to be more effective than on the over stimulating screens of social media. Your blog will house opt-ins for your target audience to receive awesome value in exchange for their email address! And example here on my blog is the Free Resources Library.
4. Your content doesn’t disappear on a blog.
You know that great Facebook post you wrote the other day? Yeah…it’s already pretty much buried by now. How about those awesome tips you shared on Snapchat? Yep…gone!
Instagram WAS the same way for the most part with their Stories, however because they are super smartypants over there they just launched a way for you to save stories that you choose and archive them in categories on your main profile page (how cool is that!?)
And I know what you’re thinking, “Um Marion? The minute I write another blog post, my previous past is shoved further down the queue until it too will disappear over time.”
Nope! With solid SEO in your posts, your content will always show up in a Google search. Same thing with YouTube videos. Additionally, you can (and SHOULD) continuously pimp your older content on your social media! Just because you wrote it 6 months ago, doesn’t mean it couldn’t help someone today! So never forget to go through your archives and share that content to be re-discovered…you worked hard on that post!
WAYS TO DO THIS:::
- If you are a style blogger, track when your featured items go on sale and THEN reference the appropriate older posts showing those items!
- If you are a realtor, keep your pulse on national news and then reference your blog posts that are relevant! For instance, when Money Magazine releases their rankings of “Best Places to Live” List, reference your blog post sharing tips on what to look for in a neighborhood when shopping for a new home!
- If you are a Personal Trainer and you see a trending story on Facebook about people giving up on their New Years Resolutions, shout out and share your blog post with tips on creating your own motivation when you feel you want to quit.
So if YOU have thought about starting a blog, I am over here encouraging you to do it!
